We are creatures of habit. We have habits that we are unaware of, habits that we desperately try to break or and habits that we try to break into. We are aware of the power of habit and try to harness its power in most areas – eating, exercising, speaking, etc…
One area that is often overlooked is our happiness. For most, we are busy out there doing, creating or accomplishing. It’s important to create daily habits for happiness as well. Your happiness will affect your life and your business. So tend to it. That’s what a Champion would do.
I was first struck with this thought when reading Richard Koch’s “The 80/20 Principle”. In fact, I took the habits from his book and put them directly into my custom made planner. This way, I could be reminded every day to implement them.
What are these habits? Here they are:
Do something to stimulate your spirit. This could mean reading the Bible, praying, meditating, or even listening to music or going to an art show. Do something that will stir your soul. As a business owner, you spend most of your time tending to your business. Take care of your soul first!
Do something to stimulate your mind. Read a book! Listen to a thought provoking TED talk, YouTube video or my Periscopes. Keep your mind sharp, engaged and active. There is plenty of research to show that keeping your brain engaged has long term impact.
Do something to stimulate your body. Get up and get moving. Exercising causes endorphins to be released, making you happier. Plus, your body becomes healthier.
Do something good for someone else. Take the focus off of you. Tend to someone else’s needs. It could be as simple as saying a kind, encouraging word or helping someone take their groceries to their cart. Whatever it is, look outwards. See how you can be a blessing to others.
Spend time with a friend. We are social beings. Call up a friend you’ve been meaning to talk to for a while and just chat. Go catch up with your parents or your siblings. Spend time building a relationship. Enjoy that moment.
Treat yourself. You’re working hard, you deserve some pampering as well. It might be you sleeping in for an extra half hour. It might be that delicious cappuccino at the local coffee shop. Or it could be a massage. Whatever it is, do something every day to treat yourself.
Congratulate yourself! Every day, look at what you have done and congratulate yourself. Celebrate the small wins with as much enthusiasm as the big wins. And, very importantly, congratulate yourself for whichever of the above steps you were able to complete today. Even if you only did one.
What do you think? Does this sound like something you would start implementing in your life?
