How many have used the GPS app on their phone to get directions? What are the two data points required? Starting point and end destination.
The same goes for life. If you want to change your life, you need to identify your starting point and your end destination. Where are you now? Where do you want to go?
The first step — identify where you want to go. As Stephen Covey mentions in his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” — begin with the end in mind. At the end of your life, what do you want people to say about you? What legacy do you want to leave behind? What do you want to have accomplished. Build that picture in your mind. Fix it in your memory.
The next step — identify where you are now. That means you need to stop what you’re doing. Stop the hustle and bustle. Stop your errands. Say no to certain obligations. Step away from the chaos and noise that everyday life can bring. Just stop. And take inventory of your life. Take time to reflect.
Einstein is attributed to saying, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” If you want change to occur in your life, you need to know what to change. So identify your habits. What are you doing or not doing? What is working for you? What is not working? What needs to change?
And then, just as the GPS app does, determine which route you need to take to get from where you are to where you want to be.
